Incompatibility Factors

by Simple Married Life on January 12, 2009

I often heard of the term ‘incompatibility’ especially when the relationship is falling apart. How real is incompatibility as a factor when one or both parties want to just say goodbye? Or is it just a lame excuse to get out of the vow and start a new romantic relationship with someone else?

I am not an expert but here are some of the factors that I often observed as part of couple’s incompatibility

Age Difference

Remember the May-December affair? Before the marriage some couples won’t see it as a disadvantage, but more often than not, they use it to escape one another in marriage. Either one is too mature or the other needs to grow (emotionally).

Cultural Background Differences

Merging two different cultures isn’t always successful in marriage. Most of the time, one has to blend more than the other. If you’re not really keen on practicing some rituals or ceremonies, you might need to reconsider especially if such things are a must based on your partner’s beliefs.

Conflicting Principles

Starting on how you’ll keep the relationship up to how you’re going to raise your kids. I observed that couples find it challenging (at times) to come to a compromise on these things. Most of the time this is rooted on one’s upbringing that extends on how you’re going to do things based on your life’s principles

Financial Management

Let’s face it. Couples usually have an ‘episode’ over money. Who earns more, who contributes more, who pays less, the list is endless. That is why it’s important to settle this before getting married. Johann and I usually talk about this and how to go about managing our ‘combined finances’ afterwards. So far, we came up with a sound agreement about this. If he needs to ‘modify’ anything about it, all he needs to do is to let me know so we can discuss it further.

I know I missed some more. Can you add on to the list and tell us more about it?
